Ocean paintings have appeared within my series of art works for decades, actually soon after the first time I saw the ocean. Since that first time, I have engaged enthusiastically with the ocean wherever I have lived. I keep my sea studies in distinct sub-series as the approach can differ a little from one to another, due to the many faces of the ocean.

I sometimes still work on canvas and linen as I have for many years, but since discovering the archival and practical watercolour substrate of yupo (a synthetic watercolour paper of heavy grammage), I enjoy the benefits of keeping the finished mixed media artworks unmounted or framed until they are chosen and can be presented in the exact way that the new owner would like, taking into consideration the environment of the office or home. Watercolour, inks and various acrylic media allow for the diverse manifestation of the ocean to be expressed in a very loose and spontaneous approach, which once completed with several layers of varnishes to offer atmospheric and UV protection, glass is not required over the mounted work as it would be on a traditional watercolour paper.

A FAQ is about local ocean and beach scenes. Although the essence and behaviour of the ocean is the main focus in my paintings, within a commission arrangement, I do create paintings of favourite beaches, vistas and life on the beach by request.
